Urgent Need: Relief for Christians in Pakistan Attacked by Extremists

Picture of Jesus in burnt out home of Christians in Pakistan

Shahbaz Jalal, director of Paigaam Ministries, Pakistan, one of my regular correspondents, has written to tell of a tragic persecution of Christians in some villages near his home.

July 31, 2009, returning from his family's medical trip to Lahore, Shahbaz was astonished to find the village No. 362, GB Koriyan (in the Toba Tek Singh district) in smoke and the road blocked off. The next day he learned that 40 Christian houses had been burned in that village. All because some Muslim extremists had accused a young boy of burning some pages of the Holy Quran. A call had gone out to all Muslims to set fire to about 40 Christian homes to teach them a lesson. Women, children and the elderly escaped into the fields to save their lives, but many were feared dead.

A few days later more Christian homes were burnt in Gojra city, just 30 km from Shahbaz' home and office. Altogether as far as Shahbaz can report, about 50 homes of Christians were burned, and also one church and one school, as well as some cattle. Seven people died, and 15 were injured severely. Police did nothing to stop the agressors.

This has been a heart-breaking crisis in Shahbaz' eyes, and he is anxious for Christians in other places in the world to become aware and to step in to help these, our Christian brothers and sisters. He is mobilizing his ministry to build a relief camp and to collect relief supplies for these people.

The types of items they hope to provide include; charpai (a traditional bed for one), pillows, pedestal fans, water coolers, water set, plates, stoves, kitchen utinsels, bath and hygiene products, medicines food, and clothing.

Shahbaz has a soft heart for children, and he would also love to see them get books and stationery again, so they can go back to school. $10 would buy all the supplies a school child needs.

$1000 would completely outfit a family in a new home!

The Global Nomad and I are seeking to find out if any other Christian organizations which are experienced with diaster relief are swinging into action there. Meantime, we do have this contact through Shahbaz, and if YOU are willing to help out promptly, please contact me, and we can make arrangements. Either I can pass on your gift to Shahbaz, or I can give you his contact email and you can make arrangements directly with him yourself. His English is fine.
